Hi Parents, We made it through the Tritt-Mazing Race and Halloween!! We are ready to get moving with our standards to get us to the winter break!!
What we are working on: Math- Addition strategies to 20 Reading- Main idea and details Language Arts- beginning blends (sn and tr) and sentence editing Science- finishing up or unit on sound
We will have an in-house field trip presented by Beaten' Path Events. Students will learn what makes sound and have the opportunity to hear many sounds that instruments make as well as hear different types of rhythms on those instruments. This will be on November 14th. Permission forms and payment envelopes will come home on Monday. The cost is $6.00.
Don't forget that there is no school on Tuesday due to election day. Also, there will be a sub here on Thursday or Friday as I will be out of town. Please make sure to send a note of any transportation changes instead of email!!

Hi Parents, We finished CoGat testing today. We celebrated with a Popsicle treat. (Thanks to Henry's mom for the Popsicle donation.) Our first week of homework was due today. Wow, is just about all I can say on this!! I had the neatest and most organized homework notebooks EVER!! Keep up the good work! We have been working on using a capital letter at the beginning of sentences and the correct punctuation mark at the end during Writing Workshop. Please make sure students are doing this when writing sentences for homework. Also, make sure that they are using all lowercase letters in words and capitalizing the letter "I" when it is by itself.

Hi Parents, Next week is going to be a busy week in First Grade. We are off on Monday for the Labor Day holiday. We will begin CoGAT testing on Wednesday and will not finish up until Friday. We will be testing every morning until about 9:15. Please make sure that your child is well rested and at school on time. We will go to the ILC on Friday for check-out and a lesson.
Here's what we will be learning next week: Language Arts- We are still struggling with using a capital letter and a period when writing sentences. We will do some more practice and review with this next week. We will also continue to work on character, setting, major events and details in a story. Our word family is -ed and -ell. Reading- We are working on blending sounds to decode words. Continue to reread stories sent home and practice any assigned sight words. Math- Continuing to compose and decompose tens and ones. Social Studies- We will finish up our book on Scarcity.
Homework notebooks will come home on Tuesday. They will be due back every Friday. The choice board will be glued inside the notebook on the first page. Students may begin their homework on the next clean page. Please only use pencil unless coloring is part of the assignment.
I hope everyone has a fantastic 3 day weekend. I am off to the UT game in Charlotte to meet my son, Harris. I am very excited to see him. It has been an adjustment not having him at home.

Here is what we have going on this week: Guided Reading- All folders came home this week. Please make sure they are returned on Monday. Language Arts- We will continue to work on short vowel sounds. Writing- We are continuing with Narrative Writing. We will focus on using periods and capitals correctly and consistently when we are writing our sentences. Math- We have been working on strategies for solving addition problems to 10. We will begin number bonds finding the missing addend to equal 10. Social Studies- We will finish a project on our locating and labeling our continent, country, state and city.
*Picture Day is Thursday. All students will have their picture taken for the yearbook. If you would like to purchase pictures, please back the picture order form sent home last week. *We will go to the Media Center on Friday for check-out. Don't forget your books.
Hi Parents, It was great seeing everyone at Open House. Here's what we have going on next week:
Language Arts- We are reviewing long and short vowel sounds. Writing Workshop- We will write our first narrative piece this week. Students will complete a web of ideas about their favorites using the bags that they brought in to share. We will use this web to construct sentences to write a piece titled- "All About Me". Math- We have been working on counting and writing numbers to 120. We will review that skill this week in Math Stations. We will learn multiple strategies for solving addition and subtraction facts to 10. (counting on, using a number line or ten frame) Social Studies-We will be learn to identify our state, country and continent on a map and a globe.
We will go to the ILC on Tuesday for a lesson and checkout. Talent Development begins on Thursday. We will be working for 45 minutes each week with Mrs. Walker until November 1st.

Hi Parents, I can't believe it is spring break and when we come back we will only have 6 weeks of school left. We had an action packed day today. We did a STEM activity creating a flower that had to be 3D, with all plant parts included and free standing in a cup. Thank you to Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Shea for helping us with the assembly of our creations.
When we return, we will have a lunch change from April 10th- April 17th for 3rd and 5th grade testing. Our lunch will be from 10:56-11:26.
I want to thank everyone for making Teacher Appreciation Week so special. I was showered with beautiful flowers, gift cards and homemade cards from the kids. I also had lunch from Zaxby's on Wednesday from the class- that was a nice treat!!

Here's what is going on next week in our classroom: Friday- ILC for a lesson with Mrs. Bates and book checkout. Don't forget your book!!
Here's what we are learning: Reading/Phonics- Long vowels "oa", "oe" and "o_e". Students will learn that when they see those letter combinations, they should use the Long O sound to help them decode. Math- We are continuing to work on adding numbers with 10 more or 10 less as well as comparing numbers (greater than, less than). Social Studies- I will introduce our next American Hero-Theodore Roosevelt Writing- Opinion Writing- Next week, we will work on a good closing to our opinion writing pieces.
